Description: An old-line foundation that changed its charitable mission as subsequent generations took control of the money, and now funds radical attack groups.

Source of wealth: Gift of John Emory Andrus (1841-1934), investor and businessman (Surdna is Andrus spelled backwards). His Arlington Chemical Company manufactured medicines and distributed them worldwide. His investments included buildings and land in Minneapolis, Minnesota, large timber tracts in Northern California, mineral-rich acres in New Mexico as well as significant land holdings in Florida, New Jersey and Alaska. In his 60s, he was elected mayor of Yonkers, New York, followed by four terms in the U.S. Congress. He held long-term posts as a trustee of Wesleyan University and as a director of New York Life Insurance Company.

Ed Skloot, executive director. He brought Surdna into the Environmental Grantmakers Association in the 1980s. Hooper Brooks, environment program director, helped Skloot turn Surdna into a prescriptive grantmaker.
Brooks told the 1992 Environmental Grantmakers Association annual retreat audience, "I think that basically the problem is most of these [environmental groups we fund] are not only bureaucracies, but they spend most of their time hitting their members for more money and sending them newsletters instead of getting out to the public.  And I don't think you can neglect thinking about that.  I do think we do have to get prescriptive."

Surdna Initiative On Smart Growth And Community Livability
The Surdna Initiative on Smart Growth and Community Livability is a special project that is focused on New Jersey, New Mexico, Maryland, and Salt Lake City, Utah. At present, there are few good models of best practice to emulate or even to describe as successful. The Surdna Initiative will foster a range of efforts in different geographical and organizational contexts where strategic support and intentional collaboration could yield consequential results in a discrete time frame. In addition to making grants, Surdna has structured a process of mutual learning between key players from the four selected sites and is designing a process for dissemination about the project and its achievements.
