Self-Description:
The Nathan Cummings Foundation is
rooted in the Jewish tradition and committed to democratic values
and social justice, including fairness, diversity, and community. We
seek to build a socially and economically just society that values
nature and protects the ecological balance for future generations;
promotes humane health care; and fosters arts and culture that
enriches communities.
Actual:
Fiercely anti-corporate leadership was the driving force behind the
Blue Green Working Group and its efforts to destroy the fossil fuel
industry with the help of unions in return for "just transition"
payoffs to energy company employees, but not to shareholders or
managers.
Origin of the Wealth:
Nathan Cummings was born in Saint
John, New Brunswick, Canada, in 1896. He moved from impoverished
beginnings to great success by hard work, entrepreneurial genius,
and a willingness to take risks.
In
1939, he purchased the C.D. Kenny Company of Baltimore, a small
wholesale distributor of canned foods, coffee, tea, and spices. That
was the beginning of the international company known today as the
Sara Lee Corporation. For three decades he personally guided the
growth of the company. He retired from active management in 1968 to
pursue philanthropic interests. In his later years, he was a
perceptive art collector and a generous philanthropist, with a
strong interest in medicine and science. He inherited a spirit of
sharing and community from his immigrant parents, and transmitted
that spirit to his children and grandchildren, who contribute their
time and energy to the Foundation. He died in 1985, leaving the
majority of his estate to this Foundation.

Grants paid, $20.4
million
Established in 1949 in New York, endowed by
the fortune of Nathan Cummings, founder of Sara Lee
Corporation.
Cummings originally funded programs to
"enhance understanding between Jews and non-Jews," bring
health care delivery to the poor, and support the arts.
It
developed into a major contributor to far-left causes during
the 1990s, then went through a total overhaul in 2001 with new
headquarters, a new president,
Lance E. Lindblom,
(salary $285,113,
benefits $60,144), and new prescriptive grantmaking strategies
to foster far-left groups with the political power to change
public policy. Lindblom was an early mentor
of the Apollo Alliance, but clashes between Alliance leaders
soured the relationship.
Programs included social justice, the
environment and a ferocious anti-corporate thrust that saw the
foundation itself filing shareholder resolutions.
All this is paid for by Cummings investments in ExxonMobil,
ConocoPhillips, Chevron, Occidental Petroleum. Anadarko
Petroleum, Duke Energy (coal, nuclear), El Paso Corp (natural
gas), and many more —plus
25,999 shares of database firm Acxiom.
