Description: An unincorporated networking organization for left-wing / anti-corporate environmental causes. EGA operates from the office of Rockefeller Family Fund (RFF) which accepts grants for EGA under the RFF tax-exemption. EGA's executive director is on the paid staff of RFF. EGA is part of the Council on Foundations-recognized Affinity Group Network.
The EGA itself does not give grants, but is a voluntary association of foundations and giving programs that holds strategy meetings to orchestrate funder programs for maximum damage to free enterprise and individual liberties.
EGA members have coerced the recipients of "prescriptive" grants to perform tasks and projects they would not otherwise have done (forest programs in particular), giving rise to environmental group resentment. The response of RFF's Donald Ross was, "
I think funders have a major role to play.  And I know there are resentments in the community towards funders doing that.  And, too bad.  We're players, they're players." To see the original transcript of the tape, click here.
EGA operates expensive programs for its members, paid for with donations from members and others, among them the anti-capitalist Funders' Network on Trade and Globalization.

Background: The Environmental Grantmakers Association (EGA) grew out of, and is still a part of, the Environmental Grantmakers Affinity Group of the Council on Foundations (COF). In 1987, a group of environmental grantmakers met in Washington, D.C. to discuss common interests and to learn about each other's specific programs. As a result of the enthusiasm generated at this meeting, plans were made for future meetings, grants lists exchanged, and a "directory" of foundation program interests was published. Subsequent meetings have reaffirmed this interest for increased communication among grantmakers through the EGA.
