Statement of purpose: "Americans for the Environment is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping citizen activists use the political process to solve environmental problems, providing Americans concerned about the environment with the knowledge and skills needed to participate effectively in the electoral process."

Americans for the Environment was initially established in 1970 under the name of American Environment, Inc. after the first Earth Day activities. The group was reorganized in 1982, retaining its original tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) entity. A copy of AFE's IRS tax-exemption letter can be obtained by contacting AFE's national office. AFE's financial audits and copies of IRS 990 reports are available on request.

AFE receives financial support from individual donors, the Combined Federal Campaign, foundation grants, conference and workshop fees, and the sale of publications. AFE is a member agency of Earth Share, a nonprofit organization promoting charitable giving in government and corporate payroll deduction workplace campaigns.
